โ๏ธ All in one place, with support youโll actually look forward to
Kia ora, I'm Polly Newton - qualified and highly experienced Speech-Language Therapist, professionally trained supervisor, workshop facilitator, creator and founder of Speech Teacher.
๐ Iโm currently the Expert Adviser for Speech Sound Disorders for the New Zealand Speech-Language Therapist's Association (NZSTA).
๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐จ I keep up with best practice and also help shape it.
๐ I bring 19+ years direct, hands-on experience across:
The Ministry of Education
Child Development Services
Satellite classrooms
Community-based grass-roots language initiatives
Accident Compensation Corporation
Disability
Justice
Creating and facilitating workshops for parents and professionals
Supporting Speech Language Therapy Students with placements
13+ years in Private Practice as an owner operator
Innovative and creative modes of service delivery, including video courses, memberships, digital downloads, webinars, teletherapy, blog posts
Iโm trained in both supervision skills for health and social service professionals and the peer supervision framework, through Coaching and Mentoring New Zealand.
My approach is down-to-earth, collaborative and practical - because supervision should leave you feeling clearer, more confident, and better equipped to support those you work with and serve.
Supervision with me feels like sitting in a cafe with someone who's "Been there, man," cares deeply (sometimes tooo much,) doesn't mind/can't help being honest and occassionally says DEEPLY inappropriate things (I have low impulse control).
I'll hide the most weird, goofy and deranged parts of myself, until it's too late and you're trapped... because you enjoy my company and respect my guidance, knowledge and direction too much ๐
Despite the above, I'm deeply committed to evidence-based practice, having in-depth, rounded knowledge of the interventions out there and choosing the intervention to fit the child, their situation, their presenting challenges and temperament.
Despite appearances, I am ACTUALLY highly experienced and qualified in supervision ๐ . I was expected to start supervising new graduate SLTs one year after graduating in my first professional job as a SLT ๐ฑ I've got that iron-clad combination of knowledge and skills learned via baptism by fire, lengthy and varied experience and professional training.
In a supervision session we might reflect, we might rage, we might laugh, we might problem-solve (and solve all the world's problems while we're at it,) we might commiserate about paperwork ๐
But every time, we will move you forward in your practice, knowledge and confidence, so you become an incrementally better clinician.
๐ Increased confidence in your clinical decision-making.
๐ Growth through reflection, guidance, and exposure to new ideas and approaches.
๐ Clarity and a plan to move forward, when you feel stuck or uncertain about next steps.
๐ Practical ways to make your work work for you, to counteract stress and burnout.
๐ Support from someone who understands the reality, conflicts and pressures of frontline work.
๐ A supervisor who has your back and won't judge you (because I've already made FAR worse and MANY more mistakes than you. Otherwise, I'd SO be judging you HAAAAARRRRDDDD.)
๐ A supervisor who will get righteously ENRAGED on your behalf if anyone treats you poorly (blame the justice sensitivity, peri-menopause or lack of impulse control. At this point IDK which one causes it ๐ฌ)
This package is a great fit if:
โ๏ธ Youโre a new-graduate Speech Language Therapist working towards full NZSTA membership, figuring out how to shift into "decision-maker" mode and how to make the most ethical and beneficial choices, within the constraints of your employment and capacity.

โ๏ธ You've newly moved into the education field, want to know more about and ensure you're selecting appropriate evidence-based interventions and could do with a few extra tricks of the trade for your kete.

"You are always inspiring and have practical resources and ideas to help with the issues I'm facing.
And sometimes, just having you there to listen is so incredibly helpful and supportive."
"I know how valuable your expertise is.
Youโve helped shape my PP - from a fresh clinician who had a lot to learn, to a clinician who is so much more confident and knows that Iโm providing the best evidence based therapy for my clients, with the tools behind the scenes to continue guiding me in the right direction.
You are worth every penny in supervision โค๏ธ"
"I get SO much out of talking with you. Much more than other year-long, full-school training programmes that my school has invested in.
As a result of your support and supervision, I have added techniques that promote speech and language into my regular curriculum teaching and I have set up and run speech groups for children with communication difficulties, who are otherwise not receiving any speech or language intervention.
I have created guides and resources to support my colleagues, and I am able to regularly share helpful information with other Teachers in my school and pass on questions that help them help children in their class, so the whole-school is benefitting.
I have learned so much from you, and I look forward to learning even more."
"I hadn't used these intervention methods before and I didn't know if they would work - even though they are evidence-based and reported in literature.
Thanks to your support with helping me select targets and interventions, I now know they work, as I've seen it happen with the children I'm working with.
As a result of this, I now trust myself to select speech sound targets and interventions, to get the best results for the children I work with with speech sound disorders.
You've got questions. Here are some answers.
I was part of the first cohort through the Massey University Albany, Auckland Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy, when it first started.
I completed the four year degree in 2006, graduating in 2007 and started my first job as a New Graduate Speech Language Therapist at Auckland City Ministry of Education, Special Education (as it was called then.)
I worked with preschool and school aged children with a range of communication challenges, including speech sound disorders, motor speech disorders, language disorders, stuttering, cognitive disabilities and syndromes.
While employed there, I completed a one year new graduate programme, receiving on the job training, new-graduate learning and training days, peer supervision and support and 1:1 supervision from a more experienced SLT in the office (who still works there 18 years later and I still catch up with at conferences and symposiums ๐ค)
In my second year of employment, I received training in Peer Supervision through New Zealand Coaching and Mentoring, joined a peer supervision group with other SLTs and began supervising new-graduate SLTs, as was expected by my employer. In conjunction with other SLTs in my office, I helped create and run a series of training programmes for Teachers supporting children with moderate needs in their classrooms.
In my third year I worked for another SLT who ran a private practice. While there, I worked with children who were private pay and funded through ACC for TBIs. I was also contracted to HOMAI - ECC for children who are blind or have low-vision as well as a satellite classroom for children with cognitive and physical disabilities.
In my forth and fifth years, I returned to work for MOE, resuming a similar caseload, as well as supporting and providing training for Communication Support Workers. I was one of the first implementers of the Learning Language and Loving It intervention when it was first created. I continued receiving peer supervision and providing 1:1 supervision for new graduate SLTs.
In my sixth year of practice, I left to have my first child and started my private practice when she was 10 months old. I saw (and still see) pre-school and school-aged children with a range of communication challenges.
In this time, I have held a number of different contracts, including subcontracting to three different ACC providers for children with TBIs - fulfiling Training for Independence and Wellbeing contracts. I have contracted to MOE Learning Support and briefly began training as a Communication Assistant to support people with communication challenges going through the Justice System.
I was also the project manager for a grass-roots local child language initiative; Chatterbox Wairarapa.
In my 10th year of practice, my second child was born and I came up with the idea to create video courses to support parents to work on and improve their children's speech sound challenges at home, and Speech Teacher was born!
I now have a large range of courses aimed at parents, workshops for Early Childhood Teachers and Junior School Teachers and Memberships that contain support, resources and trainings for parents, Speech Language Therapists and education professionals.
In 2023 I was an acting member of the NZSTA Board (Member Networks) and in 2025, I became the NZSTA Expert Advisor - Speech Sound Disorders.
Great question! I love that you value your supervision and professional development and want to make sure you're entrusting these to the right person.
I gained my Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy from Massey University, Albany, New Zealand, graduating in 2006. I was part of the first cohort that went through this degree when it was founded, so I know all about "making it work" in challenging circumstances ๐

Of course, this is a small sample of the relevant professional development courses I have taken over the years.
I do a lot of self-directed learning, depending on the needs of the children I am working with at the time, and areas of practice I feel I need to know more about.
Kei reira for valuing your supervision and checking you're entrusting this to the right person with the qualifications, experience, skills and understanding to support you.
These are some of the recognised supervision and supervision-adjacent trainings I have engaged in over my professional career, currently spanning 19+ years.
This is a sample of the training and learning that I have undertaken.
I also do a lot of self-directed learning, to reflect the areas that I am working in at the time, that I am interested in, and in areas where I recognise my skills and knowledge need upgrading and expanding.

I'm a Speech-Language Therapist with 19+ years of varied, hands-on experience in the education field.
I can support you with clinical knowledge and skills, private practice specific areas and innovative ways to use your skills, such as creating digital resources.
I take my supervision responsibilities seriously, am committed to providing a top-notch supervision experience and am continually upgrading my supervision services.
As such, I have engaged in a number of supervision-specific trainings, including the NZQA accredited NZ Coaching and mentoring supervision skills and ๐ peer supervision framework.
My approach is grounded in genuine mutual respect, non-judgement, warmth and humour. I aim for you to feel safe to bring me your challenges, and also be stretched, so you grow.
I know all too well what it's like to juggle complex cases, limited time and the pressure to do and be it all.
Supervision with me is practical, realistic and tailored to your context and desired outcomes.
Every session is underpinned by the desire to find better outcomes for you and the children you work with.
I blend research evidence, real-world experience and practical solutions to help you translate knowledge into practice that actually works.
You'll leave each session feeling clearer and more confident, and if we can manage a belly-laugh while we're at it, I'm not gonna stop us ๐
I'm also neurodiverse (I call it thrice exceptional,) so each encounter with me will be... unique ๐
I'm genuine and genuinely funny, and you can count on me to get over-the-top outraged on your behalf, if anyone dares cross my beloved supervisee (you).
We'll build a strong and long-lasting relationship that will endure outside the supervision relationship - I often check-up on past supervisees and we share and celebrate little life-moments with each other from time to time ๐
Try before you buy!
Book in for a supervision session with me, to check my supervision style matches with your needs and expectations.
The price of this supervision session will be taken off the Supervision Membership, if you decide to join (you will receive a discount voucher after the supervision session concludes.)
I do a lot of self-directed learning, to reflect the areas that I am working in at the time, that I am interested in, and in areas where I recognise my skills and knowledge need upgrading and expanding.
For each of the workshops that I create and present, I research extensively, upgrading my knowledge in each area as I go. This equates to around twenty areas of practice each year.
I LOVE hosting the guest experts, as I always learn so much from them each time. This equates to twelve topics each year.
I also attend the recently begun NZSTA guest expert workshops, which will equate to around six topics a year.
Where possible, I attend Speech Language Therapy Conferences and Symposiums. Most recently, I have attended IALP in 2023, NZSTA Symposium in 2024, NZSTA Conference in 2025.
I have an Informed SLP Membership and often use their summaries as an overview and as a place to narrow-down which articles to access.
I will also often directly contact authors of interventions I am using, when I have specific questions that I'm not able to find answers to in the published material. They ALWAYS answer me, and over the years, this has been a truly lovely way to both increase my knowledge, service delivery, and build international relationships and community ๐
And of course, I access my own supervision as needed. This includes me accessing supervision from experts in the field I need support with, 1:1 supervision and peer supervision.
Everything covered in supervision is confidential and won't be shared with anyone else, unless specifically requested by you, or consent is gained.
The one exemption to this is if you reveal any unsafe, unethical or illegal practice and you yourself are unwilling to go through the appropriate organisational procedures to deal with it. In the event of an exemption arising, I will attempt to persuade and support you to deal with the issues directly yourself through appropriate channels and then follow-up and check to ensure this has been done. If the above measures fail, as a last resort, I will make a plan and inform you of my actions.
You as the supervisee will be in charge of what to bring to supervision, and are the leader of your learning. I do not take directives from or disclose anything covered within supervision sessions with any other party.
The Speech Language Therapy world is a small one, so you can be assured that anything discussed within supervision with me will not be disclosed to anyone else, or affect any areas of your personal or professional associations or connections.
Supervision:
You'll leave each supervision session with more clarity, confidence, a sense of direction and a clear plan.
Depending on what you bring, you will be supported to reflect and process or pointed towards specific resources.
After a year of 1:1 supervision with me, supervisees say they feel:
More confident in their clinical reasoning and decision-making
Clearer about interpreting assessment results, selecting targets to work on and appropriate interventions
Re-energised about their work
Expect to grow in both clinical skill and professional identity.
Over the next 12 months, you'll build:
A deeper understanding of evidence-based approaches and interventions
Stronger confidence to trust your professional judgement, because you have the knowledge and support to back you up
A supportive professional network and community you can keep connecting with, as time goes on
After 12 months, you'll be able to speak clearly about your practice.
Membership:
By the end of the 12 months, you'll have:
Completed the required supervision and CPD hours for full NZSTA membership
Accessed a comprehensive and growing resource library, covering childhood communication
Developed a stronger, more confident clinical voice
Become part of a community that "gets it," so you don't feel isolated in your practice
You should have received a discount voucher to upgrade to the Supervision Membership. If you haven't please get in touch and I'll get one to you ASAP.
You will retain all your current accesses and resources when you upgrade to the Supervision Membership.
Then hooray and welcome!
If you haven't already received your personal discount voucher, simply get in touch and I'll whip one up for you.
I'm excited to get to continue and extend our supervision relationship in this capacity.
Never fear! I defo don't want you to pay for things more than once. Get in touch with me and I'll send you a personal discount voucher that reflects what you've spent with me.
You can email me here: polly@speechteacher.co.nz
No worries - you can simply book in and pay for individual supervision sessions when you need them.
Resources:
When you sign up, you will gain instant access to all the workshops and resources in the Speech Teacher and Speech Support Memberships.
This includes around 40 pre-recorded workshops from me, plus a number of guest-expert workshops, on a variety of communication-based topics.
In addition, each month, for the entirety of your membership, you will be invited to two new workshops from me, plus one new guest expert workshop. You can choose to attend these live, or watch the recordings on demand.
Supervision:
You will be sent a link to book in for your eight 1:1 one-hour supervision sessions with me. This link gives you access to my online calendar, so you can book in on a day and time that suits you. You will often be able to find a space at short notice if you need to cover something urgently. You are encouraged to plan ahead with your bookings if possible, so my availability matches your needs.
You can book in when you need to, so this might mean that you book several supervision sessions in a short space of time if you have something ongoing that needs addressing, or you might not book supervision for several months. The supervision is designed to work for you, when you need it.
If you need to change a booking, you can do so by using the link sent to you in the confirmed booking, to move it to a new available day or time in my calendar.
Peer Supervision:
Peer supervision sessions will be pre-booked quarterly, and you have the option to join or not. Those joining will be asked to send in what they are bringing ahead of time, so it can be accommodated within the time available and others attending can prepare as needed. A topic or theme may be suggested for the session. 3-4 issues max will be covered each peer supervision session. I will lead the sessions. The NZ Coaching and Mentoring Peer Supervision Framework will be used.
Unused/Unattended Supervision Sessions
It is your responsibility to book in and use the eight 1:1 supervision sessions allocated to you in the membership within the 12 month period of signing up. If you do not use them and end the membership at the end of the 12 month period, you will forfeit the supervision sessions and will not receive reimbursement for any sessions missed. Any remaining supervision sessions cannot be used after you are no longer in the Supervision Membership.
If you continue the membership beyond the 12 month period, you will carry over any un-used supervision sessions, in addition to a further eight 1:1 supervision sessions for each additional year joined.
If continuing the Supervision Membership month by month, after the initial 12 month period, you will be allocated an additional 1:1 supervision session every additional six weeks you remain in the membership.
If you book in for 1:1 supervision, but do not attend the meeting, that session will be taken from your allocated number of supervision sessions.
If you are unable to or choose not to attend any of the Peer Supervision sessions, you will not receive any reimbursement or anything in place of the peer supervision session. Dates will be sent out in advance, so you are able to accomodate the meetings in your schedule.
Unaccessed workshops and resources
It is your responsibility to access the workshops and resources that you want to, during the term of your membership. Once you end the term of your membership, you will lose access.
If you are coming close to the end of your membership term, you have the option to continue month by month, so you have the chance to catch up on any unaccessed workshops and resources.
I'd โค๏ธ to hear from you.
