✔️ All in one place, with support you’ll actually look forward to
Kia ora, I'm Polly Newton - qualified and highly experienced Speech-Language Therapist, professionally trained supervisor, workshop facilitator, creator and founder of Speech Teacher.
👄 I’m currently the Expert Adviser for Speech Sound Disorders for the New Zealand Speech-Language Therapist's Association (NZSTA).
👩🏽🎨 I keep up with best practice and also help shape it.
🙌 I bring 19+ years direct, hands-on experience across:
The Ministry of Education
Child Development Services
Satellite classrooms
Community-based grass-roots language initiatives
Accident Compensation Corporation
Disability
Justice
Creating and facilitating workshops for parents and professionals
Supporting Speech Language Therapy Students with placements
13+ years in Private Practice as an owner operator
Innovative and creative modes of service delivery, including video courses, memberships, digital downloads, webinars, teletherapy, blog posts
I’m trained in both supervision skills for health and social service professionals and the peer supervision framework, through Coaching and Mentoring New Zealand.
My approach is down-to-earth, collaborative and practical - because supervision should leave you feeling clearer, more confident, and better equipped to support those you work with and serve.
Supervision with me feels like sitting in a cafe with someone who's "Been there, man," cares deeply (sometimes tooo much,) doesn't mind/can't help being honest and occassionally says DEEPLY inappropriate things (I have low impulse control).
I'll hide the most weird, goofy and deranged parts of myself, until it's too late and you're trapped... because you enjoy my company and respect my guidance, knowledge and direction too much 😈
Despite the above, I'm deeply committed to evidence-based practice, having in-depth, rounded knowledge of the interventions out there and choosing the intervention to fit the child, their situation, their presenting challenges and temperament.
Despite appearances, I am ACTUALLY highly experienced and qualified in supervision 😅. I was expected to start supervising new graduate SLTs one year after graduating in my first professional job as a SLT 😱 I've got that iron-clad combination of knowledge and skills learned via baptism by fire, lengthy and varied experience and professional training.
In a supervision session we might reflect, we might rage, we might laugh, we might problem-solve (and solve all the world's problems while we're at it,) we might commiserate about paperwork 😓
But every time, we will move you forward in your practice, knowledge and confidence, so you become an incrementally better clinician.
🎉 Increased confidence in your clinical decision-making.
🎉 Growth through reflection, guidance, and exposure to new ideas and approaches.
🎉 Clarity and a plan to move forward, when you feel stuck or uncertain about next steps.
🎉 Practical ways to make your work work for you, to counteract stress and burnout.
🎉 Support from someone who understands the reality, conflicts and pressures of frontline work.
🎉 A supervisor who has your back and won't judge you (because I've already made FAR worse and MANY more mistakes than you. Otherwise, I'd SO be judging you HAAAAARRRRDDDD.)
🎉 A supervisor who will get righteously ENRAGED on your behalf if anyone treats you poorly (blame the justice sensitivity, peri-menopause or lack of impulse control. At this point IDK which one causes it 😬)
This package is a great fit if:
✔️ You’re a new-graduate Speech Language Therapist working towards full NZSTA membership, figuring out how to shift into "decision-maker" mode and how to make the most ethical and beneficial choices, within the constraints of your employment and capacity.
✔️ You're an early-career therapist needing solid, grounded support, inspiration and expansion.
✔️ You've newly moved into the education field, want to know more about and ensure you're selecting appropriate evidence-based interventions and could do with a few extra tricks of the trade for your kete.
✔️ You're returning to practice/completing the NZSTA return to practice framework, after a period away from working as a Speech Language Therapist.
✔️ You’re working independently or in isolation and want connection, support and someone to check things with and hear new ideas.
✔️You’re juggling a complex and varied caseload and want a second brain who understands the realities and nuances of your work, to bounce ideas off and decompress with.
✔️ You're a Teacher with a high number of students in your classroom with communication challenges and not enough support to know how to realistically help them, within your role and time constraints.
✔️ You're a Teacher or Specialist Teacher with a special interest in and/or learning goals around speech, language and communication.
✔️ You would love on-demand access to a growing bank of workshops and resources to refer to as needed, to extend your knowledge-base.
✔️ You want a supervisor with extensive and varied experience, both generalist and specialist knowledge, practical skills and a realistic approach.
✔️ You desire a supervisor who will hear, understand and respect your situation and perspective, challenge you when needed, and arm you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in your work
