Emma established Sound Foundations for Literacy in 2019 to provide professional support and quality teaching resources to educators and parents. She is an experienced speech language therapist, and professional learning facilitator, focused on effective teaching to develop children’s speaking, listening, reading and writing. Emma was a contributing member of the NZ Curriculum - English Learning Area Year 0-6 writing group in 2024.
Emma created Sound Walls for Aotearoa in 2020 after seeing the impact of sound walls in the USA and recognising the need for a New Zealand version that reflects our distinct accent. The cards feature photos of real children’s mouths forming each speech sound (phoneme), along with clear guidance to support the teaching of reading and spelling. They help draw children’s attention to how sounds are produced and how letters represent those sounds in print.
Build reading and spelling success for every learner through evidence based teaching.

Speech Teacher exists for you. But creating these free resources comes at a cost. I am one person, running a small business and raising a family. Costs involved include paying for design software, the hosting platform, the email platform to send you info, and my time to create, host and let you know about these resources. If you find value in and have benefitted from any of my other free resources, please consider giving a koha, to help share the costs and show your appreciation.
